On Giving Up Sugar

Disclaimer: This blog is therapy for me, creating a list of things I am looking forward to eating when I add sugar back into my diet. It may cause you to go on a sugar binge. You’ve been warned.

We haven’t given Addy sugar yet. She’s 19 months old tomorrow. We aren’t doing it to make a major health statement; it’s more practical than that. She loves her vegetables and other healthier foods, so why ruin that when she’s so young? We’ll introduce sugar to her eventually, but delaying it just makes sense to us.

That said, it’s forced us to watch our sugar intake. Once I started counting, it was bad. If I didn’t run daily, I can only imagine where I’d be today. The “running so you can freely eat” strategy works now, but will it in ten years? Probably not.

That’s why we gave up processed sugar and alcohol in August. The first week the sugar with drawl hit hard. I was tired and irritated. Three weeks in, I feel great, but I am still looking forward to eating sugar again come September. To visually indulge now, here is what I plan to eat the moment September hits:

I run so I can eat sugar and it’s a problem. My metabolism is slowing down (hello thirties) and it’s now smart to crack my sweet tooth. For the month of August, Theresa and I are giving up processed sugar. That means no alcohol, no chocolate, no coffee (I only drink it with cream and sugar). Because I am a (recovering) people pleaser, I share this to help hold me accountable. The fear of letting someone down, in this case, is a positive. If you see me eat sugar in August, you have my permission to do one of the following (or all three…just not at once): 1) Punch me in the face 2) Demand I give you $20 3) Shame me on social media Here’s to healthy eating tomorrow and Nutella calzones today. . . . . . . #yelpdc #yelpeatsdc #yelpelite #nutella #calzone #sweettooth #dceats #districteats #igdc #bythings #thefitdistrict #Augustgoals #nosugar #healtyeating #refreshinglyhonest #cleaneating #dcdining #capitolhilldc #thehillishome #seventhhillpizza #sweetcalzone #chocolate #sweettreat #tripadvisor #dclife #dcliving #washingtondc #dc

Capitol Hill’s Seventh Hill Pizza’s nutella calzone. It comes out hot from the brick oven with powered sugar on top. On a bad day, we order this to make the day better.

Last year’s goal was to transition most meetings into walking meetings. This year’s is to have more walking meetings to coffee shops. Exercise, fresh air and coffee are the ingredients to innovation (that’s what I tell myself at least). Today’s walking meeting destination—> The Coffee Bar. It’s also one of my top favorite coffee shops in the DC area (all top ten are in the link on my recent IG Story). . . . . . . . . . #igdc #exposeddc #fotodc #dctography #mydccool #bythings #washingtondaily #dcfocused #instantdc #dcitystyle #igersdc #washingtondc #exploredc #luckytoliveindc #dc #districtofcolumbia #onlyindc #dclife #walkwithlocals #igers_dc #dcliving #discoverdc #instadc #yelpeatsdc #coffeeholic #coffeeshopvibes #neonsign #dccoffee

A latte with simple syrup from one of my favorite coffee shops, The Coffee Bar.

Ice cream from one of DC’s newest shops, Mount Desert Island Ice Cream in Mount Pleasant NW.

There’s a new ice cream shop in town and it’s around the corner from my first DC home in Mt Pleasant. With bold flavors like coriander berry streusel and chocolate wasabi, they are already securing their spot in the city’s dessert scene. When I moved to DC in 2007, gelato was on the palate (@dolcezzagelato, @pitangogelato). Then the froyo craze hit (Mr Yogato, @officialfrozenyo). Ice cream is on the menu now with local shops in @icecreamjubilee, @nicecreamdc, and @capitalcitycreamery and Ohio transplant @jenisicecreams. . . . . . . . #yelpeatsdc #yelpdc #yelpelite #lovemtpleasant #mtpleasantdc #nwdc #icecream #icecreamshop #dcdining #districteats #culturetrip #mydccool #bythings #igdc #afarmedia #theotherdc #luckytoliveindc #gglocalgems #localfinds #hiddengems #lpfanphoto #washingtondc #washingtondaily #washingtonparent #tripadvisor #dessert #acreativedc #madeindc #local #walkwithlocals

The rich deserts from Milk Bar Flagship at Logan Circle. First, I’ll order the cereal milk ice cream. Then I’ll move onto their crack pie. Then I’ll sign up for one of their classes to make our own cake!

Okay, okay, that’s overkill. I’ll indulge over Labor Day Weekend. Then I hope to give up sugar during the week and then on occasion indulge on weekends. Wish me luck!
